Caucus Update: "The Tim Tebow" edition
Dec. 16th, 2011 05:23 pmLast night was the last GOP debate (save the NewsMax debate on the 27th in which only Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum signed up for).
Mitt and Newt were generally civil to each other. To his credit, Newton has run a pretty positive campaign (His critics say he is just as negative as everyone else, he just denies it better).
Bachmann attacked Paul and Gingrich (Paul over Iran and Gingrich over Freddie Mac). Bachmann also finally went off on Newt's assertion that she isn't good with facts.
Bachmann and Santorum fought over who was the most pious.
Paul may have lost some steam in the foreign policy debate with his 'America First was right' attitude.
Gingrich said he wasn't zany.
Huntsman said the word 'screwed'.
Still, the most memorable quote has to be the Tebow reference.
I am not sure how far Tebowmania has gotten across the World, but in America, he's a household name, regardless if you like sports or not (and on sports news, it's Tebow 24/7).
Tebowing has supplanted both Planking and Owling as the go-to meme for the cool kids.
So, leave it to Rick Perry to compare himself to Tebow.
Tebow's hot right now, and politicians always try to be hip and fail, so i was going to let it pass, but I had to find the quote, and then I wondered....
"There are a lot of folks that said Tim Tebow wasn't going to be a very good NFL quarterback. There are a lot of people who stood up and said he doesn't have the right throwing mechanisms, or he's not playing the game right. And, uh, he won two national championships and that looked pretty good. We were the national champions in job creation back in Texas. So, but am I ready for the next level? Let me tell you, I hope I am the Tim Tebow of the Iowa caucuses."
I surely can't be the only one who noticed this, but I haven't seen anyone mention the logical miss. (Social media has jumped on it, but only for the obvious).
For those that don't know, Tim Tebow is arguably the best college football player of all time. he did indeed win two national championships. However, I feel I must point this out, that happened before he went to the NFL. I don't know what Tebow was like when he went to the University of Florida, but he started all four years, so I tend to assume he was good out of the box.
Tebow's NFL story is a good one. Like Perry says, no one expected Tebow to be a good NFL quarterback and he has performed well above expectations. Indeed, Tebow has won 7 out of the 8 games he started.
Still, it's too soon to know the whole Tebow story (and this is where I have a problem. Doesn't anyone like both football and politics anymore. Damn, I miss Hunter S Thompson). If you ask the NFL experts, no one expects Tebow's Broncos to win it all.
In fact, if you asked around, you'd find that most think he will finish a distant fourth.
So, then again.....
