Remember when Newt Gingrich was the inevitable GOP front runner. About that...
Everyone turned their guns on him. First, the guys who fall behind Bob vander Plats (the guy who thinks marriage is the most sacred thing, like ever, ever) started to think maybe they shouldn't back the guy who was married three times (and also these pastors admit they watch Mad Men).. Them, there was Ron Paul's badass ad.
It doesn't help that the most popular Republican in the state said although he is not supporting anyone publicly, he certainly isn't endorsing Newt. Most damningly, polls show that Newton would do worse in a general election than Romney- the old 'electability' choice.
In any case, Rasmussen reports Willard is back on top
Romney 23%
Gingrich 20%
Paul 18%
Perry 10%
Bachmann 9%
Santorum 6%
Huntsman 5%
With 10% saying either or not sure, it's a toss up between three.
It makes tonight's debate all that more important. This is the last debate scheduled to feature the Big 7.
That doesn't include the NewsMax debate which was better known as the 'Donald Trump' debate, but apparently may now be Trumpless. Newsmax insists it is still on for the 27th, but without Paul, Romney, or Perry looks pretty useless.
I have a feeling that would have been required viewing. Trump, of course, is only hoping to find the GOP candidates so lacking, that by gosh, he doesn't want to, but if he absolutely must, well, he could just run for President after all.
I will miss the debates, even if they have become only more of the same thing.
Even at this late date, we still get some gems. Last debate, saw Perry actually performing up to expectations and Willard's silly $10,000 bet.
Willard hadn't had a misstep for awhile, but this claim that he didn't say we need mandated healthcare in his book, highlighted the fact that Willard is the kind of guy who thinks $10k is chump change.
I am all for getting these guys (and gal) in frontof mics, just for all the great quotes.
For example, the quote about Supreme Court Justice Montemayor.
This is also where Rick talks about the 8 Supreme Court Justices (I hear ties are a bitcch).
Other things we might miss from the other candidates:
Santorum: We don't need food stamps, people are fat.
Romney: Let's only have Medicare when the economy is up.
Gingrich: Just because I was Speaker of the House and a lobbyist, doesn't mean I'm not a Washington outsider.
Bachmann: Sadie Hawkins is a little slut.
