Last November, Bryan Ferry put out an Orchestral album called the Jazz Age. It was instrumental versions of songs from Ferry's 40 year career.
I skipped over it rather quickly. Although Ferry's last few solo albums got some amount of critical acclaim, they really didn't have much for me. On top of that, there really isn't much that is more lame in the musical industry than an artist covering themselves.
I was wrong, though, as I read the NPR review of the album. The Jazz Age re-imagines these songs as 1920's jazz standards. It feels (at least) like brand new music, as these covers only have the minimalist ties to the originals.
Very interesting and very entertaining.
