A series on the songs of my youth have to include some alt-country or Americana (before such terms existed.
Our local radio station (which was very traditional) picked up on Rank & File's "The Conductor Wore Black" and played it constantly.
I can't find any chart info on it, but the album went to #165 in 1982.
For me, I preferred Jason & the Scorchers "White Lies" which was probably my favorite song for a time when it came out in 1985, and I remember MTV playing it quite a bit.
It went to #34 on the Rock chart in 1985 and was followed by "Golden Ball and Chain" which went to 16 on the same chart. Two albums broke the Top 100.
It's still pretty good and a fun video too.
