Great Lost Albums #2: The Idyllists
Jun. 20th, 2020 10:50 amGreat Lost Albums # 2
A series in which I share albums that should have got more exposure. Unheard gems? I don't know. I liked them anyway.
The Idyllists
s/t
2010
Talking Bird Records
I predicted big things for these guys, but despite some exposure to television, it was not to be. They blended American harmonies with Britpop sensibilities, but perhaps they were late to catch the waves that might have lumped them with Rooney, Weezer and OK Go or added them in with the Kooks and The Coral.
They left three albums. I am picking the sophomore self-titled record, but you the predecessor is strong too.
California-based with a British-born singer (from the Tender Idols), they advertised sounding as if "Morrissey was put on Ritalin as a kid". They were probably always more Beatles than Smiths, more in the tradition of Squeeze perhaps, though infused with Pacific Coast influences.
I haven't heard from them in years, but their guitarist Matt apparently just made an album as Tokyo Snow. Singer Ian Webber continues to record as a solo artist and released a record as recently as 2018.
