Parquet Courts blew me away with their last album 2016's Human Performance. It imagined, if not exactly the sound, at least the feel of Velvet Underground wrap around shades cool. Last years, Milano (which ostensibly was a Daniele Luppi record, though it was a collab with the Courts and Karen O as well) doubled down on that late 60s cool Lou feel.

I didn't necessarily expect the band to improve, but "Wide Awake!" may be just that (and if not, then at least an equal). This time, featuring not Luppi, but another amazing collaborator, Danger Mouse, the band goes in new directions.

In this case, it's a lot of the best art bands of the late 70s and early 80s. Pick a few: The Fall, Fear of Music-Talking Heads, Gang of Four, Wire, heck maybe even some Minutemen. Ok, there's still a quite a bit of what got them here in the first place- The Velvets, 70s Lou Reed, the Ramones, Television- the sounds of classic New York.

Pushed to make a decision, I personally might give Human Performance a slight nod; though, that funky angular 80s guitar will probably tilt this album over for most. In any case, neither is a wrong answer.
