Whitney unexpectedly passed away yesterday.  I shouldn't speak ill of the dead, but well, here goes.

She was for a matter of several years as big of a pop star as it gets.  She had massive hits with  songs that only an artist of her talent coukld write- "I'm Every Woman", "I will always love you" and "The Star-Spangled banner".

With the likes of Diana Ross slightly before and Mariah Carey and Celine Dion slightly after, Whitney helped popularize the term diva.  Whtiney was a singer that was completely shallow, full of herself, and had troubles with drugs (all qualities I adore when say, they apply to Darby Crash, but for Top40 pop songstresses, no way).

In any case, even though I have had to live 30 years with people who think lyrics like "I believe children are the future" are incredibly deep, I will always love Whitney for loving Bobby Brown 15 years after no one else did, and for giving us "Crack is whack".

Still, you may or may not know, it is because of Whitney, Nick Lowe is a millionaire.

Follow:

1- The Bodyguard was mega-huge, as I am sure everyone who was around remembers.
2- The soundtrack sells 45 million copies, largely based on the success of "I will always love you"
3-  Curtis Stigers had a song on that soundtrack (I only remember the name- but he was a one or two-hit Adult Contemporary artist of the day)
4- Stigers song was "(What's so Funny about) Peace, Love and Understanding"
5- Though popularized by Elvis Costello, that song was actually written by Nick Lowe

Thus, Lowe is a millionaire and never has to do another day of work.

And, with a nod to Paul Harvey, that's the rest of the story.
