I first heard about Al Jorgenson's Buck Satan project about 15 years ago, so you can say there are some expectations.

The Jorgenson of that time was a can't miss artist who had put together three essential industrial albums in a row ending with the commercial breakthrough Psalm 69. his side projects were always of note, and Al fans sought out every release from Lard to 1000 Homo DJs to Pailhead to the Revolting Cocks.

Like any artist that stays on the scene for three decade, Al made some mis-steps, and a Buck Satan album in 2012 carries much less weight. It is, as you can guess, a country industrial project. While exciting at the time, there's plenty that has come along since that would steal that thunder- more than anything, Hank Williams III, who has made a career of marrying metal and traditional county.

Even worse, cult albums are just supposed to happen on their own, and Al's ambition here begins to get scary when time goes by. Ostensibly, it should stand next to Jon Wayne's Texas Funeral or failing that, Al's buddy Gibby Haynes best work.

So, what's the verdict? Well, Buck Satan actually does work- at least close enough for what you hope for. It's not Al's best work, but like 2006's Rio Grande Blood and that same year's Revolting Cocks album Cocked and Loaded- it does come close to those heights at times.

Country and industrial are without a doubt, an odd combination, and if it resembles any band- for better or worse- the first to come mind would be Rednex- those responsible for the techno-flavored "Cotton Eyed Joe". The lyrics never quite overcome HW3 comparisons, when H3 has released ten albums of too much drugs, too much drink country.

Even still, if you like the idea of Buck Satan you will probably return to it again and again. Revolver had the album online, and if it is still there, you can take a listen.

In any case, it's all over the YouTubes.
