Still, they are eternally linked through the Trainspotting soundtrack. That movie resurrected Iggy for a new generation and brought the electronic Welsh duo to the American masses.
Now Iggy has literally showed up everywhere- White Zombie, Death in Vegas, Peaches, At the Drive In, the Nymphs, Slash, the Cult, Cat Power, Kesha, New Order, Kylie Minogue, Best Coast and many many more including forays into classical and electronic tinged music.
Iggy and Underworld had some down years following that late 90s heyday but both are coming off well respected discs. Iggy with his Josh Homme-helmed Post Pop Depression and Underworld's much lauded Barbara, Barbara....
This is an EP so it’s probably helped/hurt by its brevity. Underworld is fantastic in support. Still, there’s only so many ideas here that include Iggy singing/talking over club bangers.
Most importantly even when it works, the question remains if it merits repeated listens. “Get your shirt” is probably what everyone imagined but it’s just too cheesy. (On paper, it probably worked, but Iggy has had way more cheesier moments than peers like Bowie and Reed. For me, this song never quite overcomes that obstacle). “Trapped” works as a conventional song -somewhat gothic, not a million miles away from Sisters of Mercy. The remaining two songs are Iggy telling stories. “Bells and Circles” is memorable but a bit too light weight and its subject matter might turn people off post-#metoo. “I’ll See Big” has a bit more personal feel so that side of things works, though it’s not really enough to prop up everything else, and frankly both songs, are better on first listen than on subsequent ones.
This is an interesting detour for both artists, and I can't think of anything to say in that i don't want to say it wasn't worthwhile. I just doubt I will ever come back to it.
