It is an interesting time for country music right now. While, arguably their is a bit of 'Urban Country' crossover the likes of Florida-Georgia Line and Luke Bryan, there is a revival of 'real country'. The country charts have seen Chris Stapleton, Miranda Lambert, Kacey Musgraves, Eric Church, Sturgill Simpson and big sales for Colter Wall, Shooter Jennings and Jason Isbell among others.

It is a lot of talent getting recognition, which takes me back to a time where Country was exciting for me, and names like Yoakum, Earle, Roseanne Cash, Crowell, lang, and Lovett were big stars.

Which probably explains why I like Cody Jinks. It's funny- I can't quite put my finger on it, but I like it. I suspect that Jinks has a booming voice. He's not that much different from Toby Keith, Hank Williams, Jr, or even Tim McGraw in that aspect. Indeed, if they haven't already, country music could seamlessly fit his songs into their rotation.

The other aspect is that he doesn't necessarily take things in an extreme way. So the lyrics are pretty basic. Sure their might be a Jackson Browne reference and Lifers doesn't specifically name the great all-time troubadours, but clearly is owing a lineage to Cash, Haggard and Willie.

So, there is certainly a 'rock ear' aspect. It should come as no surprise then, that Jinks started out as a hardcore punk singer. It all sort of blends in a way that Steve Earle's first record did. There is no doubt that the music is pure country, but there is a rock attitude just laying underneath.
