New Music Initative 068 and 069
Nov. 12th, 2016 12:37 pmIn the interest of economy of space, here's a post about two very different musical acts who made it on my radar in 2016.
Hayes Carll is hardly new, now 15 years and 5 albums in. 2016's Lovers and Leavers was produced by Joe Henry to much acclaim. He's Americana in a style where he's bound to get Jason Isbell comparisons, and his girlfriend is Allison Moorer. He's most often described as a Townes Van Zandt-stle siger/songwriter which isn't wrong, though I occasionally hear a bit of country-ish Leonard Cohen.
Americana, like other genres is filled with 'next big things' and 'hidden gems', but most are more hype and hope than substance. Carll is the real thing.
Bleached are sisters Jessicaand Jennifer Clavin who previously in a band called
Mika Miko. Inevitably, their sound is circa 2003 when it looked like bands like The Donnas and Kittie might take over the world. While those bands never interested me, Bleached draw from the right parts of pop-punk.
