I used to watch a lot of MMA. I still do, although now it's not as often (I used to watch about every PPV) and it seems like the sport has grew tenfold.
I did watch this weekend's event; St Pierre vs Diaz
There used to be a couple of MMA fans who visited here. Not sure if that is still true, but here's a few thoughts.
-George St Pierre is about as dominant as anyone there ever has been in the sport. He's popular but I think he is a boring fighter. He's a wrestler so many matches (like this one) mean St. Pierre takes his opponent down and then sits on top of them.
It's a good strategy if you ever fought with brothers or cousins as a kid. Diaz is a good fighter and did try to get St. Pierre to stand up, and to George's credit, he even dominated this part of the game.
I do think it's a bit unfair that St. Pierre always seems to fight at home (His last 4 fights have been in Montreal or Toronto), but I am sure that is a smart way for the UFC to get a lot of Canadian fans.
Nick Diaz ended the night with an announcement that he was done fighting. A surprise that led to a bigger shocker- Diaz, a former Strikeforce and WEC champion has never paid taxes. UFC President Dana White says he would rather have ninjas after Diaz than the IRS, which I wholeheartedly agree with.
Other thoughts
Johnny Hendricks and Carlos Condit is probably going to be one of the fights of the year. Hendricks looks as unrefined as fighters get, but I think he is tremendously talented with his hard stone hands. I don't know that he could beat St. Pierre, but I think he is a very good fighter.
Nick Ring and Chris Camozzi was a good fight between some The Ultimate Fighter up-and-comers. John Makdesski also looked good in his fight and Colin Fletcher looked weird, though not impressive.
in Non-PPV news, the other big story was that Dana White said Vince McMahon challenged him to a fight, whether UFC or WWE style. Knowing McMahon, it has to be true. I am pretty sure Vince is up for anything for publicity.
