I have to credit John defFrog's post on K-tel records to really get the mind going.

How could forget this important part of my youth. by 1984 and 1985, I was buying full-length cassettes, but the years prior were spent via K-Tel.

The best of these being ChartAction 83!

An epic lineup featuring "Come On Eileen", "Goody Two Shoes" "Der Kommisar", "Sexual Healing", "Every Breath You Take", "Shock the Monkey", Golden Earring's "Twilight Zone" and "Jeopardy" by the Greg Kihn Band.

Of course, it was a safe bet to capture the singles instead of buying, say After The Fire's record or Golden Earring's "full length"; and it was a couple dollars cheaper.

K-Tel hit financial trouble around 1984 which probably explains a few things, but by then, i was interested in Bruce Springsteen, sting, and Dire Straits- artists with a vision that extended to full albums. That said, I did use K-Tel once I was in high school to provide me an education in 70s FM rock- compilations with the likes of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Steely Dan, and Joe Walsh.

Nor did it come to much surprise that in the 90s, I saw the success of a British series called "Now that's what I call music" and pondered, if they ever made an American version of that, it would be huge.

Long story short- If defFrog reminded me of a song I haven't heard or thought of for years, OXO's "Whirly Girl".

Oddly, the song holds up in its own way- a 80s 'hit' that has all the trademarks of classic 80s pop.

I had to do some research on OXO which was Angel 'Ish' Ledesma, who previously was in a band called Foxy, who had a Top 10 disco hit called "Get Off" and had a late-80s Hi-NRG hit by putting together Company B in "Fascinated".

'Whirly Girl" only made it to #28, but it's pure 1983.
