Garbagecanmusic is in town and we were looking for things to do. I was caught unawares but at the same moment Unknown Hinson was in town. We finished our fairly-priced imported draft beers and beat it downtown.
Hinson played two sets both of which were over an hour (impressive!). We missed the first set but caught the full second set.
Hinson has been slowly gathering audiences, mostly with his role as Early on the Cartoon Network show Squidbillies. I got into him early- 2004's reissue/major label release of the dare-I-say classic The Future Is Unknown; although defFrog knew him before that.
Hinson plays a traditional country sound with some funny lyrics like "I make faces (when I make love)", "Your Man,,, (is gay)" and "I cleaned out a room (in my trailer for you)". His combination of Zombie Elvis image and white trash schtick makes one think of the Cramps, but Hinson is more in line with 50's country and western than anything.
it also makes for a weird concert in that Hinson has more in common with George Jones than with any of the punk bands the average Hinson concertgoer would normally see. One suspects if he ditched the jet black eyebrows, and toned down the rest of his ghastly pallor make-up, he likely would do well playing County Fairs (He'd have to change the lyrics as well).
Hinson is a fun concert. He interacts with the crowd, which is quite funny, though I couldn't hear parts (I'll blame the venue's sound). He also is way more of a guitar virtuoso than one would expect. His licks could get him a job with any FM rock group or Southern Rock band.
I didn't snap pics or video as it wasn't brightly lit, but check out this footage of Unknown live.
