I was 9 years old when Elvis Costello's "Everyday I write the book" came out. The first time I heard it, it immediately was one of my favorite songs.
Although, I had no idea of the context (Charles and Di's marriage) until years later, the idea of writing a song that took the form of explaining life as a book was too novel for me to resist (Sorry, Taylor Swift).
As the song wasn't going to take the world by storm, I only heard it a handful times on the radio. Years later, I would become friends with people who couldn't get enough of Spike and those early moments of loving literary music sparked and ignited.
"Book" went to #36, and was Elvis's biggest hit until "Veronica" did considerably better and reached #19.
Costello's chartwork isn't nearly as successful as one would think (Those are his only two Top 40 hits, despite the fact songs like "Allison" and "Watching the Detectives" are constantly heard in 2012. EC has only had six songs to reach the Billboard 200 if you include his two "hits".
I still like this song, and though there may be other Costello songs, I prefer, this definitely was on the short list of my favorite songs way back when.
