Rick Perry probably wishes he had a chance to do it over.  This week saw both Sarah Palin and Chris Christie both making final decisions not to run.  Christie's speech was self- deprecating, humorous, and humble.  He should leave the 2012 scene looking like the "most  likely to" of 2016.

As the Iowa caucuses move closer and closer (January 3?  December?), these may be important days.

Rick Perry was seen as unbeatable a month go.  Now, according to a national CBS poll, he is a good five points behind tied leaders Mitt Romney and Herman Cain.

Perry is in such bad shape that you don't need to suck up to him now.

It was bad as it was going to be after that Alec Baldwin SNL skewering, but with Perry in Iowa, he just needed a quiet week.

Instead, there were staffers leaving, cynical audiences, and criticism that he was weak on that ol GOP chestnut, immigration policy - and it only got worse from there.

I think in different circumstances, Perry would have weathered N-wordrockgate (link contains that word), but he especially did not need it when things were headed south.  I think I will give Perry the benefit of the doubt- that he saw the rock, was offended, and ordered it painted over.

Still, part of the problem if you find yourself in this situation is that everything you have done will come into question- so that would include being a proud supporter of States rights, showing support for Confederate veterans and their memorabilia, and turning a blind eye to hate crime legislation.

When it didn't look like it could get any worse for Perry, one of his supporters, Pastor Robert Jeffress was telling any camera that would film him that 'voting for Romney" would be "giving credibility to a cult".

Well, the focus on Perry probably makes Michele Bachmann happy, as the news stories starting with "The faltering campaign of Michele Bachmann", now start with "The faltering campaign of Rick Perry".

So less focus on her lying about the size of her audience or running away in fear from those evil college students.

Tim Pawlenty probably wishes he could have his decision to quit the race back.  he made the decision the day after the Ames Straw Poll, when it looked Iowans had clearly made their mind up that they liked Bachmann, and Perry was a juggernaut.

Still, I don't think he would be in Cain's position now.  Cain is a dynamic speaker, and the poll numbers have given some hint that he might have in it for him to make a serious run.

How long will Cain's momentum last?  Is America ready for a President who wears a black Stetson?  Hard to say, but for now he's in a good spot.
