On the Shelf 068: Barry Adamson

Barry Adamson has a CV that is about as cool as you can get- former member of both Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and Magazine; and time spent either gigging with or re-mixing the likes of Iggy Pop, Visage, the Gun Club, Depeche Mode and Jon Spencer Blues Explosion.
Probably not real surprising, but the last few years have seen some critically loved works from former Bad seeds (and I even admit that I have trouble keeping up)- coming to mind are recent albums by Hugo Race and Kid Congo Powers.
I gave notice to Adamson's solo career (now ten albums in) just over 15 (!) years ago with Oedipus Schmoedipus. That album featured what may have been the best song I heard in 1996- the Jarvis Cocker sung "Set the controls for the Heart of the Pelvis"; as well as contributions from Nick Cave and billy MacKenzie. Oedipus didn't blow me away as a whole(as I remember it) but it would be hard for anyone to shine next to the likes of Jarvis (at the top of his creative heights) and Nick.
It feels good to catch up with Adamson in 2012 and the brand new "I will set you free".
Adamson's modus operandi is the confident European cool character of Cocker or Stuart Staples. It's hard for anyone to pull off, but Adamson did learn from the best (Nick Cave and Howard Devoto).
