I did also get to see the Iowa Wild at least once before their season was over. The Iowa Wild are an AHL team that feeds into the Minnesota Wild NHL team.
The Wild is slightly different than the Energy in that more than a few players will get to play in the NHL. There are bigger rosters and more injuries.
I wasn't doing a good job of keeping tabs on the Wild but I did do some of my preliminary research (quick web browsing) and found 2 things about this incarnation of the Wild 1) they are a winning team, which they have not been in their short existence and 2) since minor league prospects often get traded when the major league team is looking to deal, the cupboard had just been swept bear.
The Wild beat the first place Milwaukee Admirals by a score of 4-1 with a strong performance from goaltender Steve Michalek. Gerald Mahew scored two of the goals which were his first of the year.
The Wild's biggest names are Patrick Cannone and Zack Mitchell with a few games played with the Minnesota Wild, Mike Reilly with a bit more NHL experience, prospect Sam Anas, and Ryan Carter with almost 500 games in the NHL.
The Team captain is the impressively named Maxime Fortunus, who has spent four years in the Dallas Stars farm system.
The Minnesota Wild did make the playoffs this year, so 15 players were called up at the end of the season which included Anas, who was second in league scoring for rookies, Canone, the team scoringleader, Mitchell, Reilly, Carter, and Michalek.
Des Moines has two minor league hockey teams, and usually the comments are made in the difference in the slick AHL players and the state of art arena versus the 18 and 19-year old USHL players and their rundown rat-infested skating rink. I did notice that there was a lot more fighting in the AHL, as the refs tend to just let them go to give the audience something to cheer on. Which is fine and is part of pro hockey, but also makes me worry about taking my three year old, who now thinks hockey mainly involves fisticuffs.
