In the first major Iowa poll Ron Paul is in the lead.
To be fair, Paul won the RevolutionPAC poll, but you will excuse me if I don't get excited over a headline like Ron Paul wins poll sponsored by Ron Paul PAC.
Gingrich has been battered by all sides, so maybe it is not surprising that it is time for the next one to take the lead.
Now things stand like this according to the Public Policy Institute:
Paul 23%
Romney 20%
Gingrich 14%
Santorum 10%
Bachmann 10%
Perry 10%
Huntsman 4%
Gary Johnson 2%
Of course, as we know from Chris Wallace, if Paul wins here, it "doesn't count".
Perry's media blitz now includes radio ads that sound like those terrible small town restaurant commercials ("Marybrth, I love the pie here at the Cafe, but you know what I don't trust that Newt Gingrich"). Perry's radio ads are even more fake than his tv ads. He would have been more successful hiring Dan Walters.
I guess you could say it's an open race. The Religious right is throwing a fit that Bachmann and Santorum are splitting the vote, that they are encouraging Chely to drop out.
Still, Bachmann continues to pound the pavement, shaking hands, hugging babies, and signing heads.

Today was going to be the big day for those who hate newt Gingrich and really, really hate Mitt Romney. The Family Leader is an Iowan conservative group that likes to imagine that they will be kingmakers. Their big endorsement was to come today, and they chose....
well, no one.
The family Leader if you weren't paying attention, hosted a Dinner/Debate and made everyone sign their marriage contract.
However, their leader Bob Vander plats (who is essentially the organization) came out in favor of Santorum (If Santorum loses, well, he didn't have the "support "of the Family Leader. See what he did there?) Vander Plats also apparently called Chely and asked her to stand down and throw her support to Santorum or Perry, in what a Republican insider calls a "weird" weekend call.
To shed some more light on the mild-mannered members of the Family Leader, I feel I should share this quote from Chuck Hurley, president of The Iowa Family Policy Center: “I do regret that one erstwhile friend and culture warrior has threatened to, ‘Burn Bob’s body, drag it through the streets and hang it from a bridge,’ if Bob doesn’t endorse who that person wants him to endorse,” Hurley said. “Unfortunately, this individual claims to follow the ‘good book’ which says things like, ‘Let all anger, bitterness and malice be put away from you.’”
