Ten years ago, I don't know that it was, but Those Poor Bastards were one of the first groups to make it a thing. They recorded a song called "Pills I Took" which might be Hank Williams 3rd's best moment.
Sure, there's Nick Cave and 16 Horsepower and Hank 3 of course, but the genre's grown. It's the kind of thing that my buddies at Sepiachord write about.
Of course, it sounds great on paper, but most people don't have the talent to pull it off. You either have to have a gimmick like Unknown Hinson (and even then, you have to be clever enough to pull that off) or you have to measure up to someone like Cave (which is durned impossible).
So although I love everyone who tries the genre, it's not something that comes off as well as it did at the drawing board.
TPBs have been one of the more successful bands in this subgenre, and there's a reason for it.
They are better than most. They seem to be deadpan to the point where it doesn't sound a million miles away from an actual Louvin Brothers track.
they don't always pull it off of course, and they get a bit same-y for me, but if this is a genre you think you have any interest in at all (think 16 Horespower, Legendary Shack Shakers, Slim Cessna, Unknown Hinson,Black Heart Procession, Eddie Spaghetti) then you need to check them out. "Vicious Losers" is the new album.
