On the Shelf 130- Interpol

bedsitter23It doesn't seem that long ago that Interpol was one of the new bands in a crop of "future sounds" alongside the likes of Ladytron and The Faint. (Who else was around back in that 80's inspired 'scene'? Chicks on Speed, maybe. LCD Soundsystem, I think)
12 years have passed, and Interpol are now the old guard.
I thought the other bands in that 2002 movement were better and it took me to 2004's sophomore album "Antics" to really get into the band.
People who don't like the band will say that they follow the same kind of Joy Division inspired formula time and time again.
I will dispute that some, but like some of their colleagues (and I don't think you can avoid comparisons with The Strokes), they got hit hard by "difficult third album syndrome".
Half of what was wrong with "Our Love to Admire" is probably mental. That ridiculous deer cover. It colored everything about a disappointing album
The singles were inspired though their titles only fed fuel to the haters. "The Heinrich Maneuver"? "No I in Threesome"? Really, guys?
By the time the fourth (self-titled) album came out, I wasn't even paying attention anymore.
"El Pintor" is here four years later (an anagram, get it?)
I know "Pintor" won't convince anyone who hates the band already, but for fans of the band, it's a welcome addition.
It does for the most part capture the band's classic sound, but generally feels 'new' as it progresses from song to song.
Sure, Interpol's icy goth/ classic new wave sound tends to be as formulaic as much as the Ramones or AC/DC (or sorry, the Strokes). I don't think they can escape it. That said, if you are fine with that formula, this is as about as satisfying as Interpol has been in a long, long time.
