I first was introduced to NYC group Cold Cave with 2011's Cherish the Light Years.

They were one of many bands in that time period who were tapped in deeply into a blend of goth rock, new wave, darkwave, and synthpop that was really starting to breakthrough the mainstream. Seemed like there were a lot of bands in that time period that were channeling Ian Curtis and really trying to get some mileage off of accessible dark pop. Cold Cave didn't quite move me. Certainly they had some potential (as opposed to White Lies who didn't do much for me), but there were better bands doing what they were doing (She Wants Revenge) without making any mention of bands in the broader picture like Interpol and the Editors who were on the scene.

Wesley Eisold, leader of Cold Cave (and only real solid member, to be honest) hasn't thought much of Cherish either and wanted to up his game.

Up his game he has with Full Cold Moon, the new album. That may not be news for some as it is really just a compilation of EPs from last year, but for those folowing less closely, let it serve notice that they truly are at the top of their genre now.

Cold Cave has toured with Boyd Rice, which has gotten them more bad press than good, but the news is that their music finally measures up to some of the iconic album art that they have used, which makes one think of bands like Joy Division, Swans, Suicide, and other goth rock and industrial/noise royalty.

The new stuff is real good and single "A Little Death to Laugh" is a prime example of doing this genre well. Those who dislike the genre (and find its seriousness to be too much) will probably do best to pass.
