Raised on the Radio #35
Feb. 19th, 2014 05:08 pmThis series covers the artists that were popular in my formative years.
It really doesn't get bigger or more important than this.
No, please come back. It really is legitimate. I was 13 and it was a Top 10 hit.
I really don't have strong feelings one way or the other on Rick Astley. I never bought any of his albums or even came close to it, but his are fine songs. I like them alright and I would listen to them today.
He was clearly the poster boy for manufactured music in the UK in the 80s, but I don't know the US crowd gave much thought to that. If anything, we felt he was in the Susan Boyle school of people with big voices and unlikely looks.
Astley's big voice is one reason that I really don't mind him. Humorously, I've come to realize that Rick's love of Motown isn't that far removed from my idol, the Moz's.
So, ummm, this actually happened.
Anyway, three Top 10 hits in the US before Astley had to show his rebellious side and grow his hair long and ditch Stock Aitken Waterman for his 1991 'comeback' and did get his fourth American Top 10"Cry for Help"

Serious Artist with Michael Hutchence hair is Serious.
I don't know what Rick Astley in 2014 does but I suspect he walks around the house counting his millions from "Rickroll" royalty fees, and saying things like "John....I am your father".
