Save the aisle seat
Nov. 9th, 2011 06:53 pmReal Steel - Real Steel has got a lot of good press and has been described as "Rocky meets Rock-em sock-em Robots."
It is to everyone's involved credit that it lives up to that hype.
Even moreso, as Real Steel is more Bloodsport than Rocky. Sure there's the father-son interaction and the down-on-his-luck story going on, but it's all pretty basic stuff. Hugh Jackman does execute it all perfect. Indeed, Steel is probably the most predictable film I've seen in three years.
None of that matters, though, as it is impossible to cheer on for this tale of the next logical step of WWE and UFC (well, probably not really), and that's robot fighting.
Steven Spielberg is the executive producer and though I am not sure what role he had, he did see a good thing here. The writers and production team otherwise don't have much in the way of a knockout resume.
The story is based (at least loosely) on a Richard Matheson short story. I haven't read Matheson, but I have been meaning to. I am familiar with some of his work for the Twilight Zone and if Steel sounds vaguely familiar, it is because "Steel" was a similar-but-different story adapted for TZ.
I won't say everyone will enjoy it, but I think a lot of people (and types of movie fans) will like it. It is much more than what it could have been. It's already got a sequel greenlighted, but that just means it's a hit.
