Concerts: February: Josh Blue
Feb. 20th, 2019 05:24 pmJosh Blue- I am a big stand up guy and I will go see any comedian if I get a chance regardless. Indeed, the comics I like are all across the board. That said, I do think Josh Blue is funny.
Blue came to prominence in 2006 winning the fourth season of Last Comic Standing. LCS was a mess at times (later seasons put the comics together to live in a house) and never was truly amateur. Still, there's no denying in those pre-Netflix days that it was a shared cultural reference point.
Blue was a unique voice at that time. He had cerebral palsy and it was a source of his humor, but most of all, he was funny. Bryan Ricci was the opener. Ricci was a New Yorker who started his comedy career in Arizona. There's not a ton of stuff on the web for Ricci, but he is a really funny guy. He worked well as the night's MC and his material paralleled Blue's observational humor. Still, way funnier than you'd expect from most opening acts. Hard not to think of Dave Attell as the stereotypical non-PC New Yorker, but very much in line with that. Anyway, I laughed the whole time.
I didn't laugh the whole time during Blue's set, but it was good. Blue's humor is a mixture of a few things- observational, personal, confrontational. He is a bit *ahem* Blue, but not in an offensive way. What I really like about Blue was that his whole act seemed mostly improvisational. Indeed, from a friend who had seen him before, his show was almost completely different than one they saw a year before. I liked that he could do that and maintain being really funny.
Blue, like every other comedian these days, seems to be selling his own strain of marijuana. There is a druggy component to his humor in 2019, but again, there would not be much needed to clean up the act for all ages. I was glad I saw him and there are moments from the show I won't soon forget, which is the hallmark of a good show. I would probably not run out to see him again, but certainly is worth seeing
