SIU Basketball 2019: Part 2
Jan. 10th, 2019 07:45 amSIU played Drake on Tuesday night and I was again in attendance. SIU was going in 2-0 and Drake 1-1. Drake is having an all-time great year going in, but suffered a major setback when it was announced their star Senior Guard Nick Norton was going to be out for the year.
SIU was a slight favorite, but could not catch up with Drake. Drake went up 10-0 to start and never really looked back. Drake was up 43-22 at the half. SIU clawed back in the second half, but could never make it close enough.
Drake was able to stop the momentum by their 3 pointers. Sophomore Nate Thomas, Senior star Nick McGlynn and Freshman DJ Wilkins led a Drake team that went 13 for 25 (52%) with 3 point shots.
SIU's big man Kavion Pippen was mostly shut out, held to 12 points, though he had 4 blocks and 5 rebounds. Armon Flecther (coming off team suspension) was one of the few bright spots- he scored 21. Freshman Darius Beane came off the bench for 7 points, 6 rebounds and 2 steals. The other player to really be aggressive was Junior Guard Eric McGill. McGill scored 17 with 6 rebounds and 2 steals.
Drake is more known for turning out doctors, lawyers and scientists, but they really seem to have a good Basketball team right now.
