It's not my fault, but the 2016 election is hot.
Wikipedia has an interesting page already set up which contains all the top prospects (interestingly, until yesterday, it listed David Petreaus as a possible GOP contender. I think they were okay in removing him). You can't blame them though, it's their job.
So I blame Joe Biden, because I think he started it all with his Election Day comment that he didn't think this was the last time he was voting for himself which implies he either has 2016 intentions or thinks he may one day be a finalist on American Idol.
For now, I have to consider, Biden the front runner for the Dems. There's a lot of Al Gore in him. He doesn't excite anyone, but he was the Veep for a popular two-term President. It's hard to fight that.
Interestingly, Joe may not even be the leading Presidential candidate in the Biden family.
I have a hard time guessing who the next Democratic contender might be. I heard once a theory (which is seemingly true) that the GOP nominates the man who has put in the time previous to the nomination (Nixon, Reagan, Dole, McCain, Romney- all had some previous failed campaigns before getting the nod) while the opposite is true for the Democrats. The Dems like new blood (Obama, Clinton, Carter) who have no previous campaign experience and you don't see many repeat campaigns (The ones you have seen - Gary Hart, Gephardt, McGovern are shells of previous efforts).
I am also going to lay out there that Hillary claims she's not running, but we will get back to her.
So, who are the Dems that seem to have a buzz. Maryland Gov. Martin O'Mally is probably the top of that list and he sort of screwed it up when he said that people were better off four years ago.
The only other names I think of are all mayors - Cory Booker (Newark), Julian Castro (San Antonio), and Antonio Villaraigosa (LA), and we typically don't like mayors in our Presidential primaries (Giuliani is the exception, though given his performance, maybe he proves the rule.)
Given the above posted theory , I think we already know the next nominee. I suspect it will be one of the following: Ryan, Huckabee, Palin, Santorum or Pawlenty with a few longshots like Jon Huntsman and Sam Brownback thrown in.
Still, if you are going to blame anyone for getting 2016 talk going it's Jeb Bush, who is making noise about a 2016 run. Jeb is an insider (by blood).
You can also blame the pollsters who have already started (Floridians prefer Jeb followed by Marco Rubio, Huckabee, Ryan, and Condi Rice with question marks on Christie and Santorum for their negatives. New Hampshire prefers a match up between Hillary and Chris Christie with Biden, Elizabeth Warren and Andrew Cuomo as strong contenders on the left).
You can also blame the news outlets like CNN for running with 2016 stories, though I suspect (Hillary) Clinton vs (Jeb) Bush is too good to ignore.
I also curious to see where Ron Paul's support goes next. Paul will be 81, yet son Rand lacks dad's charisma. Gary Johnson had a successful (for them) Libertarian run, and though he says it's too early to talk 2016, one assumes we will get a repeat.
Jesse Ventura also is making a lot of noise about a 3rd Party run, while making the talk show rounds to promote his new book DemoCRIPS and ReBLOODicans and throwing out his running mate might be Howard Stern. A duo that would have surely burned up the newswires 15 years ago but I question its power four years from now.
Stay tuned.
