Comics Round-Up
Jul. 8th, 2012 12:31 pmBatman Incorporated #1 (DC)- by Grant Morrison - It wasn't probably nine months ago that Batman Incorporated #1 came out, but as part of DC's big "start over" and decision that every few months they are going to roll out "#1 issues", here we are again. I guess I get it. Nobody wants to job on at issue #34. Still, this is kind of ridiculous.
Besides that's the problem with this book. It is pretty good, and it continues some of the Batman mythos that Morrison has created (and his Batman stuff has been pretty good). I even think the idea of the League of Extraordinary Batmen is a good one. Still, this isn't a very good starting point for someone who hasn't been reading Morrison's Batman stuff (and ultimately that is what a #1 issue is supposed to do- get you in at the ground floor.
Oh, and this issue gives us this great meme which you will surely now see everywhere, so it's well worth it for that.

Fury My War Gone By (Marvel/Max) -written by Garth Ennis- The first issue of this was hard to track down, so I am just now getting to reviewing this. I missed Ennis's first run on Nick Fury, but apparently this is a continuation. That said, it wasn't what I expected. It's a very nuanced version of Fury. There is a lot of character development and introspection. It's neither what you expect from a Max title (senseless killing) nor is it the Samuel L. Fury that Marvel has tended towards recently.
Ennis is using this Fury to tell some great cold war spy stories. It's like what I imagined Steve Canyon would be like (if I actually knew the first thing about Steve Canyon). This may be the next great Ennis title, instead of his highly anticipated Shadow run. It's got a lot to offer for fans of Pulp and Goran Parlov's art is perfect- full of Venture Bros-style swagger and machismo.
Unfortunately, good luck finding this. you'll probably have to wait until the trade.
Go here for a brief glimpse of hard-boiled Fury action.
