We are at critical mass time for the caucus. You can tell because now you can't get through any commercial break with at least one Presidential ad.

Mitt Romney has finally bought ad time and is running two ads. The standard ad which shows Willard as one of the most Smiler-ish of candidates to ever take the stage - a guy so slick he makes Bill Clinton look like Harry "Plain Speaking" Truman.

He is also running an upbeat ad that states Mitt has only had one church and been married 40 years. The subtext of course is that Willard isn't a three-time married Baptist-turned-catholic like you know who.

Speaking of which, Newt Gingrink has now bought airtime on radio and tv. Newt has made a point of being positive, and his ad is upbeat- Newt is the consummate Southern gentleman- an intellectual who spends his days on the manor reading and wearing suits. Essentially, Newt is Tom Wolfe with a flat-tax plan.

Still, the ad that is topping the headlines is Rick Perry's "We let gays serve in the military, but we can't pray in schools" ad.

Ok, I have to admit it grabbed my attention the first time I saw it.  Perry has been pushing 'faith' in his ads, but he has never went to this extreme.  Obviously, activists and religious leaders have a problem with this, and everyone is rushing to point out 1) the repeal of 'don't ask don't tell' is supported by about 70% of the country and 2) there's a whole separation of church and state thing.

I don't have a problem with the ad.  In fact, I'd as soon as know before the election what the candidate thinks, so I decide if they should be supported.

Lest we forget also, this is Iowa, home of Rep. Steve King and some of the reddest counties in the nation.  It is the home of a Republicvan population that put Michele Bachmann at the top of the Ames Straw Poll, and has been supportive of Pat Robertson and Gary Bauer in years past.

No, more than being offended, the thing that sticks out to me is how inauthentic Perry seems in this (and all of his) ad(s).  Bachmann may be a crazy fringe Bible-beater, but this image doesn't seem to fir perry at all.  (Also, it's not working, news sources have been reporting Evangelicals support Newt over everyone else about 2 to 10).

I can't completely count Perry out, but all thing seem to point to him being little more than a footnote, and if I had to bet, I don't see this gaining him any support.

Less notably, Perry is also running a "Let's drill for oil in any ground we can" ad, and in my opinion, he should have stuck to that line of argument.
