On the Shelf 157: Mystic Braves
Easily one of my favorite albums of last year was "Desert Island" by the Mystic Braves. While garage rock sounds easy, it's deceptive as there are so many garage bands out there, but rarely does one gel in that perfect way. One negative that gets mentioned with the MBs is their polish. However, for me that is part of their appeal. That polish tends to put them that much over. It was true for the Zombies in the 60s as it was for the Caesars in the 00s.
Mystic Braves had released two albums ("Island" was #2) and had always just belted them out, so album 3 "Days of Yesteryear" is actually the sound of a band making a concerted studio album.
It's telling in many ways. Whereas DI was 1965 DoY is 1968. DI was the first 13th Floor Elevators album, DoY is Easter Everywhere. DoY besides being another year older, sounds like a different year. It is as if Sgt Pepper's had dropped this January and the band is hearing it for the first time.
It's pretty solid stuff. I have to say it doesn't grab me like DI did, but it's still a noteworthy effort, and sort of an interesting direction for growth.
One of my favorite newest bands in the last 5 years or so, this helps seal that reputation, Even the cover looks like the psychedelics have set in, check out the album on Bandcamp.
