On the Shelf 113: Nick Cave

Los Angeles public station KCRW has brought in many musicians over the years and has recorded some of my favorite live recordings of my favorite bands.

In late 2013, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds took their "Push the Sky Away" album their and recorded a session.

It's a mellow affair, spotlighting the best songs off of PtsA including the title track, "Higgs Boson Blues" and "Wide Lovely Eyes", which fit perfectly with a list of Cave standards. The mood reminds me a lot of No More Shall We Part, and gives you a different experience than you might get from Live Seeds or seeing a Cave concert.

It's a worthwhile addition for any Cave fan, though no particular new ground is broken here. The centerpiece of the set is a slowed-down, drawn-out-emotionally version of "Mercy Seat"- a song Cave fans have heard over and over again, but plays well in this new version, somewhat similar to Johnny Cash's cover.
